Set during the Civil War that gripped Peru in the 1980s, Paper Dove is a film that succeeds in juxtaposing scenes of beautiful Andean landscapes with harsh and cruel images of armed political conflict. The protagonist, Juan, is an adolescent trying to survive the prevailing poverty in the Andean Zone of Peru, when he is forced to enter an adult world. He soon discovers the dark side of humanity when a group of revolutionary paramilitaries enters his town and recruits Juan to join their ranks. Juan is emotionally shocked, and struggles as he is indoctrinated by the group's leaders to fight for their political goals. Finally, Juan rebels, guided by his desire to live his own life and survive the conflict.
